FIELD DAY UPDATE

This year’s field Day will be June 25th and 26th, at the Youth Community (aka "Skateboard") Park on Fulton Rd across from Piner High School. Operating will begin on Saturday, June 25th at 11 am and continue until Sunday, June 26th, 11am.

A new feature of this field day will be having a VE session on Saturday.
We will need VE’s for this session. Please contact Brian at n6iiy@arrl.net to sign up to be a VE.

Our Field Day plans this year are very similar to last year. The key differences are:
  • SSB and CW stations will be located outside between the RVs during the daylight hours. This is so that more passersby will be able to see us in action. In the evening, we will move the rigs into the RVs.
  • The GOTA (Get On The Air) and VHF/UHF stations will share a 10' by 30' tent formed by three EZ-Ups. There will be sides on the end EZ-Ups to provide shade, but there will be a lot of open area. As with the SSB and CW stations, the goal is to provide an open feeling to passersby. We will put up all the sides on the EZ-Ups during the nighttime hours.
  • We will be powering the CW station from a solar panel array (courtesy of Charlie Sikes, KZ6T) for at least 5 contacts. This earns us an extra 100 bonus points.
  • We will have a demo station to show off other aspects of ham radio. Darryl KI6MSP will be demonstrating the home brew Buddipole antenna. The contacts from this station will be just for fun; they will not count for points.

Do You Want to Operate?
I sure hope you want to operate! Because this could be one of the best chances you'll get to make as many contacts as you can. Our goal is that no one will be denied the opportunity to operate. You can ask seasoned Field Day veteran to relinquish the microphone or key. Even if you only hold a Technician class license, we can pair you up with a control operator and you can make contacts at the GOTA station.

Worried About Dinner Saturday Night? Please RSVP!
Don't be! Pat Coyle, KG6JSL, is preparing a wonderful dinner for Saturday night. Dinner will be served at approximately 5:30pm and will include a combination of ribs, chicken, burgers, and dogs with several choices of salad and bread. And all this for only $10! How can you go wrong? We do need to know how many will be coming, so please let us know if you will be there for dinner. You do not need to pay in advance; you can pay that evening.

Educational Activity
John Breckenridge, WB6FRZ, will be leading the Educational Activity, which will consist of building a code practice oscillator / siren kit. If you are new to kit building and soldering in general, this is a great way to start out. The educational activity will begin about 2:30 pm on Saturday afternoon.

What We Need You To Do
We need to know how many of you will be coming either to operate, help log contacts, be a tour guide, and especially if you will be coming for dinner.
If you can help out with any of the following, please contact Darryl via e-mail at ki6msp@arrl.net:
  • Provide chairs (preferably the kind that won't sink into a lawn) we need about a dozen more.
  • Provide tables (6' is the best size). We need about three more.
  • Operating - Voice or CW (especially CW, since CW contacts count for twice as much)
  • Logging - We'll show you how to use computer logging
  • Tour Guide - Help show the public what it is we're doing and perhaps even convince them to take a stab at making a contact at the GOTA station.
  • Dinner - If you will be coming for dinner, please let us know so we can be sure to plan accordingly
  • Equipment Transportation - We need one more vehicle, preferably a pickup or SUV, to help transport equipment from our storage location to Field Day. We need to pick up the stuff shortly after noon on Friday, June 24th.

Thanks in Advance and 73,
Darryl Paule
