The Toaster

The SCRA Communications Van is affectionately known as the Toaster because it looks like one. In fact, it is a 1970 Winnebago mounted on a 1970 Ford F350 chassis and powered by a 300 ci  6 cylinder engine. Cruising speed is about 50 mph. Gas mileage is between 10 and 15 mpg.
The Toaster is a fully self contained communications van. It has its own 2 meter radio for mobile use. Two deep cycle, 225 Ah batteries provides auxiliary power to interior lights and fans, as well as power for any type of radio use, including high frequency. A battery integrator allows the auxiliary batteries to be charged from the engine, and they are wired to be used for alternate starting power if the engine battery charge is insufficient.
The electrical system may  be connected to shore power or a portable generator. When connected to AC power, a converter provides 35 amps of 12 VDC, and also powers 110 volt outlets as well as 110 volt power for the refrigerator.  A propane stove is included as well as a pressurized water system.  A unique feature is a tilt up antenna mount on the rear bumper which allows antenna assembly at ground level and easy rotation to the vertical.
We use the Toaster as a  Comm Van for public service and special events as well as hauling and storing Club equipment. It is a real “attention getter” that invariably draws attention and comments and publicizes the Club quite effectively.
Numerous members, past and present, have donated substantial time and money to the restoration of the Toaster and to them we are grateful.
